Submersible water pump is a device is a device which has a hermetically sealed motor close-coupled to the pump body. The whole assembly is submerged in the fluid to be pumped. The main advantage of this type of pump is that it prevents pump cavitation, a problem associated with a high elevation difference between pump and the fluid surface. Submersible pumps push fluid to the surface as opposed to jet pumps which create a vacuum and rely upon atmospheric pressure. Submersible water pumps are more efficient than jet pumps. Hydraulic submersible pumps use pressurized fluid from the surface to drive a hydraulic motor down-hole, rather than an electric motor, and are used in heavy oil applications with heated water as the motive fluid.

The submersible water pump system consists of both down-hole and surface components. The main surface components are transformers, motor controllers, junction box and wellhead. The main down-hole components are the motor, seal, pump and cable.

Submersible water pumps are operated by hermetically sealed motors and are, as their name suggests, used to pump liquid that they are fully submerged in. The pump operates by pushing the liquid it is submerged in up to the surface. Like in a centrifugal pump, the pump consists primarily of a casing and impeller.

The submersible water pump works by pulling the fluid towards itself. During the intake, the rotating impeller pushes the fluid through the diffuser. From there, the fluid goes to the surface. The submersible pumps are self-priming as they are already submerged in the fluid.

Just as the name suggests, a submersible water pump is a pump that is completely submerged in the fluid it is pumping. This is as opposed to pumps which are situated external to the fluid being pumped. It is possible for a submersible pump in to be fully submerged because the pump’s motor is close-coupled to the body and hermetically sealed.

Above ground pumps can lose prime causing the motor to burn out and require replacement. Submersible pumps have fewer problems and can last up to 25 years before needing to be replaced. Cavitation is a common problem with above ground pumps. Submersible water pumps are not subject to cavitation problems due to the fact that they are usually deep beneath the surface of the water.
